I tried using the example skin however, it seems broken since it uses the nowplaying plugin

I'll let the author of the skin to provide competent advice on this, but for the record, skins using the NowPlaying or the WebNowPlaying plugins depend on the media player you use, since each of them supports media playing in a different way. What might seem broken if using a player that is supported only by WebNowPlaying might very well be perfectly working if using a player supported by NowPlaying, and viceversa.
